The Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay would like to congratulate the TWO recipients of the Service Above Self, Coastside Volunteer of the Year Award, Dr. Michael Klass and Judy O’Leary!
The recipient of the award is determined by a committee of Rotarians who carefully discuss and weigh all of the information presented about the nominees to identify a final ranking. Usually we give this award to only one person, but this year there were two people who stood out among the rest and whose rankings were so close that we are giving the award to both of them.
Dr. Michael Klass has been the volunteer Administrative Coordinator of the San Mateo County Coastside Medical Reserve Corps for the last 6 years recruiting and training over 50 healthcare volunteers to respond to Coastside disasters, and support local public health activities. He has planned, participated in, or coordinated over 200 formal activities including 40 training classes, and disaster exercises. And quoting from his nomination, "He has gone way above and beyond what even the most dedicated volunteer usually does."
Judy O’Leary is a Director of Coastside Hope. Judy is “the heart, soul, and public face” of Coastside Hope’s Adopt a Family which serves over 365 families and seniors every year. She prepares over 300 tax returns a year—again taking ownership of the program. A volunteer with this organization for 17 years, she also mentors and trains other volunteers. For example, one of Judy’s tax program translators has now become a certified tax return preparer.
Our 3rd Annual Magic of the Coastside was a huge success!
