Program: Big Coyote/Little Coyote Program
Teresa Adam, Kevin O'Brien, Rosi Fontana and Beau Donegan spoke about the Big Coyote/Little Coyote Mentoring Program at Pilarcitos High School.
Teresa's involvement with Pilarcitos High School began 7 years ago when she taught students about banking and finance. Two years ago she spoke with Raj Bechar, about adding adult mentors which led to Big Coyote, Little Coyote. (Rai is the Principle at Pilarcitos HS and, unfortunately could not make it today to join Teresa.) The time commitment is half an hour a month. Mentors and students discuss things like the future, problems, getting a job, etc. Teresa even provided special help to her student to facilitate his getting a job.
Kevin added that mentoring is a challenge; one must establish a relationship, and the students have differently needs, so encouragement is important. They don't have the things we take for granted. For example, one of the students has a job and gives her money to her mom. They deal with things like gangs, prison, advanced math class. One student, that Rosi meets with, for example, is 18, an adult with a good job. He wants to be a contractor. While he has a negative history, he is smart and just needs some support. As a Native American, he has a strong sense of pride, is resilient.
Mentoring is very rewarding, so much so that Teresa is taking on a second little coyote. Beau, speaking from the perspective of a professional executive coach, applauded our volunteers and talked about the importance of having a program structure and agreed-upon goals which is how she works with her clients when coaching them. She provided everyone with a hand out that listed key components of this kind of relationship.
As she mentioned, mentoring is much like being a coach; you ask the right questions and share your experiences. Ground rules help to hold everyone accountable. Listening without judgment is also critical. Mentors are like social workers, but it is important to remember that they are not the student's parents. For her professional clients, she facilitates a 3-hour training workshop program providing tools and ideas.

Dave Andrews asked Eric Shapero to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Lisa Warner-Carey gave the inspiration thought about “How do you know what to do with your life.” From this reading we were reminded that with work you should: a) Identify your needs; and b) it should also meet the needs of the world. She reminded us you cannot have true work satisfaction unless both needs are being met.
