August ’97, first Woman president of Club. It wouid take a year to relate it all. Her Gala raised a lot of money. Once she won the marble drawing for $1,500 and Eric told her congratulations you just won $500 and a Paul Harris Fellowship. She was urged to interviewe for a GSE Team, told it would be good practice - Thjey won’t pick you. It turned out she lead the team that year to New Zealand! Remains active in Menlo Park Rotary.

Article by: Mary Rogren

Greeters: Rev. Michael Arase-Barham (SOA) and past president, Renee Lewis
Pledge of Allegiance: Eric Shapira
Inspirational Thought: Led by Renee Lewis. Renee found some words of wisdom around Christmas . . . As we all struggle to shop, and to create a wonderful Christmas for our loved ones, our consolation is that our loved ones may do the same for us. Renee also offered what we should all hope to share at Christmas --- Charity, Respect, Love, Peace . . . .
Visiting Rotarians: Mike Osborne from Marin Sunrise. Mike just moved to Half Moon Bay. He is a charter member of Marin Sunrise, so his heart and ongoing membership will stay at the Marin Sunrise club. He is very interested in learning more about the Rotacare Clinic in Half Moon Bay as he started the clinic in Marin and understands the issues associated with operating such a clinic.
Visiting Former Rotarians! This meeting was our FIRST ANNUAL ALUMNI LUNCH!!!

Honorary Member Induction
Liz asked Paul Wrubel, our membership chair, to introduce our new inductee. Paul remarked that he wasn’t qualified --- however passed the baton to three long term members who were all sponsored by our new inductee. . .
Bob Rathborne was introduced as our Honorary Member by Dave Cresson. Dave noted that Bob was the first charter member of our club and first President. Dave also commented that Bob has been a giant in our community over the years, and not only has been a public servant but also the 1st Postmaster (El Granada.)
Eric Shapira was also sponsored by Bob. Eric commented that he “says thank you every day” for Bob pulling him aside at the post office one day many years ago and suggesting that he become a Rotary member.
Dave Dickson was also sponsored by Bob. Dave recalled that Bob not only played such a huge role in Rotary, but also was the long-term General Manager of the Water District, and still holds the Water District record for “computer shot put.” (See Dave for more information.)
The club rose to their feet and gave Bob a standing ovation! Congratulations Bob! You are welcome to come to any of our meetings! Bob commented how grateful and proud to have been part of Rotary.
Paul Harris Award
Kevin O’Brien awarded a Paul Harris award to our Alumni member, Val Fernelius. Val received his pin with four sapphires – in honor of his many contributions to the Rotary Foundation.
Good News/Bad News . . . .
Caroline Gossart, our exchange program commented that she is now part of the Dance Team for the HMB Basketball season. She also auditioned for the school play – and she is hopeful that she will be able to dance in the play. Caroline also thanked Joe Brennan for treating Caroline and her host family to the Odd Fellows Christmas Dinner. Caroline “earned” her dinner by selling raffle tickets at the dinner. Last Sunday, Caroline also attended the District’s Exchange Student Christmas Party, hosted by Mark Flegal at his home in Atherton. Each of the (10) exchange students were tasked with making a dish from his or her country. Caroline opted to make Belgian waffles, but she “cheated” and used John Evans’ recipe instead as she couldn’t find all of the ingredients in our American grocery stores for the waffles. The waffles were a “hit” at the party and quickly disappeared, even with using an American recipe . . .. Caroline also commented that she attended a farewell dinner at Mitone’s (Mitone’s exchange student left to go back to the Philippines.) And Caroline commented that she won’t be attending next Thursday’s meeting as she is going to Southern California for Christmas . . . .
John Evans commented that it’s great to see so many old familiar faces – and welcomed our alumni. John also commented that his famous waffle recipe is on the back of the Bisquick box! John also shared that at the Exchange Student Christmas Party there was a white elephant gift exchange for the students. In past years, the exchange students would never “steal” gifts, for fear of offending someone. This year’s crop of exchange student fully understood the concept of stealing, (and as John noted the concept of “American greed.”)
Ginger Minoletti also welcome our alumni guests, and extended an invitation to rejoin Rotary.
Bill Johnson gave his donation for his birthday. He also extended his thanks to the (18) past presidents in the room, which include both current and alumni members. Bill also commented that Robin Jeffs created the Half Moon Bay Rotary Foundation many years ago (which our good news/bad news $$$ go to.) The local foundation has raised $175,000 (lifetime) – and these $$$ have specifically benefited local Half Moon Bay causes over the years.
Christine Quinn noted that her son’s football team won the North Coast Football league and are now headed to State. Go Serra Padres!
Announcements:
Wes Burgess has the first raffle tickets available for sale for the 2017 Magic of the Coastside.
Shana Reilly-Pond noted that the dictionaries have not arrived yet, so we will be distributing the dictionaries to the 3rd graders after Christmas. Shana also noted that she is still working on ways to help the homeless, and particularly working with Dignity on Wheels. Such an endeavor will likely take a couple years to organize --- so she will be updating us in the meetings to come.
Shana also read a letter from Judy O’Leary of Coastside Hope, thanking Rotary for their generous contributions to the Adopt a Family program.
Liz Schuck announced that next Thursday’s meeting will be at the Odd Fellows Hall. The Odd Fellows and Joe Brennan will host a “Cowboy Christmas.” Mary Corcoran will lead us all in song!
This Week in History:
1969 “Alice’s Restaurant” was released by Arlo Guthrie.
1966 – Walt Disney died. Note that Walt Disney was personally overseeing work on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride before he died, which opened at Disneyland In early 1967.
