Ruth Rooney, President and CEO of Execudome, Boston & San Francisco Ruth is a Leadership consultant and coach working with leaders across this country and Canada. She works with smart leaders to improve their shills by putting more heart into their leadership
Heartitude Works! She addressed not only the captains of industry but the leaders at work, home and community
Heartitude Works! She addressed not only the captains of industry but the leaders at work, home and community
She defines leadership as whether someone is following you, someone is learning from you, someone is served by you and/or someone is a better person because of you.
Ruth address the assembled as all leaders and Rotarians then poses the question; Might there be a dark side to Service Above Self? Maybe it is not sustainable.
First she leads us in an exercise of everyone pointing directly overhead and imagining a clock face on the ceiling. She then asks everyone to trace a circle around the clock face in the clockwise direction. While continuing that circular trace lower your hand slowly to waist level and then below to pointing at the floor then imaging a clock face on the floor, has anything changes? Everyone is rotating counter clockwise on the clock face on the floor - thus she demonstrated a change in perspective between looking up and looking down.

She asks us to look more deeply at Service emphasizing the power of Heart in service and work of any kind.
Ruth quoted the common workplace attitude of going to work and leaving your heart at the door then picking it up on again on your away home.
Pointing out that this attitude is both limiting and damaging to the individual and his and her relationships all day long.
She cites the horror that in some work cultures the "Heart is bad for business!”
Heartitude is the acknowledgement and reinforcement of putting one’s heart into their business, service and everyday life. It is based on
the four benefits of Passion/Joy, Resilience, Commitment and Creativity
Self Compassion
Emotional fulfillment
Laughter
Fitness
Self Compassion - High performers in particular are hard on others and hardest on themselves. Research shows that how we talk to ourselves is determinative.
In talking to our selves we might say “What is wrong with me?” which leads to self criticism. Ask instead “What is right with me?” for its positive effect. If you make a mistake don’t be self intimidating - and you shouldn’t be that way to others! Ask yourself “When am I good enough to be rewarded/acknowledged and do so!
For a better attitude and effectiveness learn to say “NO”. How you say it is the thing, think about how you say no. For example if some one asks you to do something adding to your already full plate, say no by telling them what you are saying yes to which is taking all your available time. High performers don’t ask for help fearing it shows failure or weakness.
She asked the assembled to make a list of the things we did for others. Then to make a second list of the things we did for ourselves. This both illustrated the above lesson and gives us a perspective on our current status, which we should do from time to time.Pointing out that this attitude is both limiting and damaging to the individual and his and her relationships all day long.

Laughter has many benefits! It increases the circulation, aids the immune system, slows aging etc. We are at our best when we are having fun!
High performance leaders are worst at fitness - how little sleep they give themselves.
Ruth’s book, "HEARTATIUDE WORKS, ADD A LITTLE HEART TO YOUR SMARTS AND REALLY PLAY TO WIN” comes out Summer 2017
She sends out a monthly leadership article (without marketing etc.) A sign up sheet was circulated in the meeting for members to sign up
Ruth then led us in a brief exercise on which we were all instructed to write three things we would do for ourselves in the next three weeks.
We wrote them on big red paper hearts (Valentines Day was yesterday) and then had a table mate sign it
as the reminder to nudge you to actually do three things for yourself to become a better you…and leader.

THIS WEEK AT OUR MEETING
Greeters: Rev. Michael Arase-Barham (SOA) and past president, Kevin O’Brien along with Rosi Fontana
Pledge of Allegiance: Betty Shapira
Notes of Inspiration: Led by Rev. Michael. Michael shared the following poem: I live my life in widening circles that reach out across the world. I may not complete this last one but I give myself to it . . . . I circle around God, around the ancient tower. I’ve been circling for thousands of years and I still don’t know: am I a falcon, a storm, or a great song
Guests
Caroline Gossart, our exchange student.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Liz noted that she planned last September that we would have an offsite lunch this week (and told the caterer – in September -- that they had this particular week off.) She quickly tried to arrange lunch at the last minute today – but nearly all of the restaurants in town were closed in support of “Day without Immigrants.” Liz was able to eventually arrange sandwiches from Cunhas at the last minute . . . (Liz mentioned that she “kissed the guy at Cunhas . . . .” as a thank you!)
Happy/Not So Happy News
Kevin O’Brien shared that he attended the final High School basketball game at the new Cunha’s gym/Boys & Girl’s Club, and was particularly thrilled to see Caroline especially singled out and honored at the Senior night celebration. Kevin also noted that his water problems at his house were solved (thanks to Dave Andrews.) He was especially thankful for receiving an added bonus from Dave --- Dave and his team carried a heavy curio cabinet (and treasured memory belonging to his mother) from the garage to upstairs in his house.
Ralph Ely had sad news – Bill Mahar -- a dear friend and office mate for years and years - - and major volunteer and contributor on the Coastside, passed away this past week after a long illness. Bill was a finalist at last year’s Magic of the Coastside for volunteer of the year. His wife was so grateful last year for his recognition by Rotary!
Eric Shapiro urged Rotary members to attend the latest Coastal Arts League show featuring the Southwest. Eric, Liz and other Rotary members acknowledged the quality of the artists in the show. Eric has two works included in the show. (Congratulations, Eric!)
Charise McHugh apologized for not being here for several weeks, but she has been busy especially with her recent Chamber Recognition Awards event. She urged Rotary members to come out for the Teachers’ Supplies Party at Maverick’s event center tonight. In addition to $4500 of supplies being handed out, teachers will receive crisp $100 bills from various charities around town, including Rotary.
Other news from Charise: March 1 is “Challenge Day” at the High School and she is looking for volunteers. Challenge Day is a day-long activity where students can share their feeling, concerns in life, etc. with their adult partners and mentors. E-mail Charise if you are interested in participating.
Finally, Charise presented our Rotary club with a “Proclamation” from the HMB Chamber of Commerce honoring the 100th anniversary of Rotary.
Caroline Gossart reflected on her week. On the weekend, she was excited to participate in Senior night, and perform on the dance team at the final basketball game at the new Cunha gym. On Saturday, Caroline attended a wedding shower for Mary Rogren’s future daughter-in-law. Caroline also mentioned that she joined the swim team this week – and is excited to participate with Mia Griffiths and Grayson Barmore on the team (although the practices are grueling.)
And most exciting, she had a nearly 2 hour (and very successful!) interview with a Stanford alumni! Good luck, Caroline!
Robin Jeffs missed last week as he was attending a very special Birthday party for him. (His actual Birthday is the 28th – and he just missed being a leap year baby.) He put his $100 for his birthday in the pot, and encourage others to contribute to the HMB Rotary Club Foundation which he helped found nearly 15 years ago. Today the ENDOWMENT fund is nearly $168,000 and is in a Charles Schwab account (and run by Warren Barmore.) Kevin O’Brien interjected that Robin danced up a storm at the Coastside Women’s Club Valentine's dance.
Paul Wrubel honored Richard White for his stamina --- Yesterday, Richard went to core strength training in the AM; walked 18 holes of golf (16,500 steps); and went to circuit training in the evening at the Colony club.
Announcements
Dianne Bobko announced that tickets for Magic of the Coastside are now on sale. Dianne sent out an e-mail that she would like all Rotary members to pass along to their friends, contacts, etc. announcing the event. Similar to last year, tables of 8 can be reserved as well as single admission tickets and reserved seat request at a table of 8. Dave Dickson is managing ticket sales this year. Please contact Dave or Dianne if you need paper tickets.
Mary Corcoran has done a wonderful job placing some great articles promoting the event (and most recently on the Half Moon Bay Patch.)
A press release came out on February 15, 2017 – announcing the major local donation for the Magic of the Coastside event, the Heal Project.
The Service Above Self nomination process (to be awarded at the Magic of the Coastside event) closes on Wednesday, February 15.
Mary Rogren and Ginger Minoletti announced that Magic of the Coastside auction items need to be delivered in the next couple weeks.
Stacy Trevethon is looking for interested members to work with her in developing an Essay Contest at the high school. The program has been successful in past years, and is a great way to award our local budding writers.
MAGIC OF THE COASTSIDE - Raffle Tickets – Wes Burgess conducted a magic trick giveaway to raise $$$ for Magic raffle tickets. EJ Dieterle and Eric Shapira were major winners (and contributors.)
