She started as a school teacher and has a passion for science, which attracted her to HeartMath. Stress has become so normalized, we all experience it. It affects our entire physiology, including our heart. Marrying the science of HeartMath with the idea of lowering stress is her goal. According to Lisa the heart has brain cells; emotion starts in the heart.
Cell phone exercise—choose your favorite picture, and feel the positive emotion as you look at the picture, breathe into the heart while feeling this emotion, breathe slower and deeper than usual & concentrate on the emotion. For 20 secs. How do you feel? More relaxed.

HeartMath was founded in1991. They research stress and heart/brain functions, www.hearthmath.com. A wide range of organizations use their teachings, Kaiser, Stanford, olympians, US Army, univ, schools, etc. Police, firemen and paramedics are also using it.
On Heart/math vs meditation. Meditation is about quieting the mind…positive thinking vs positive emotion. Positive thinking is situational and starts in the mind. Positive emotion starts in the heart. Positive attitude creates stress free attitude, but it is only temporary.
Stress floods us with stress hormones which are as harmful to our bodies as a river of acid. It makes it difficult for our cardiovascular system, our immune system and even our brains to function well. Chronic stress can age us prematurely.
Breathing technique, heart-focused breathing. She walked us through the technique. It changes focus quickly. Through self regulation, one can achieve coherence. Coherence is an optimal state where all your systems are working together.
Depleting emotions are negative, regret. Hate anger…. Renewing are positive, love joy hope…Depleting emotions create a high heart rate. Negative emotion creates cortisol. Positive emotions create DHEA, aka the happy hormone. High cortisol-low DHEA can lead to heart disease, Alzheimer's etc. Practitioners report great improvement after 6 weeks of practice.
Quick Coherence Technique— focus on heart, breath slower and deeper than normal, 5 seconds. Make a sincere attempt to express a regenerative feeling such as appreciation for something done or something in your life. Reaction, a deeper sense of calm.
Clarity—frustration imparts our performance. Appreciation improves performance. Emotions start in the heart and are stored in the brain. Powerful connection.
Good sport, Steve Wilson agreed to be hooked up to EM wave 2 monitor. Low and behold there was a heartbeat! She asked him to do heart focused breathing. We all sent Steve some appreciative thoughts for being such a good sport. His ratios improved and smoothed out.
It takes practice, the more you do the more it works. The monitors are emWave or emWave2. You can get them as phone apps.
A parting technique, the appreciation activity—breathe in for 5 seconds and out for 5 seconds for each self appreciation, notice the difference. 50 seconds total.

Happy/Not So Happy News
Kevin O’Brien shared about his vacation to Seattle, Eugene, Cascades, Yakima, Bend and Reno. He encouraged all to take a road trip and take advantage of the car time to reconnect with your spouse.
Announcements
President Warren asked that those not wearing a Rotary pin donate money to the polio jar as the penalty pig has gone on a walk about, location unknown.
Kevin also reminded us that District 5150 was #1 in giving to TRF last year; and that through May, our HMB Club had given $300 per member, best we’ve ever done! Our club was #16 in giving across our District.
President Warren announced that he had attended a President’s Council meeting last evening, and he reminded us that a some of the shared designation portion of our donations to TRF comes back to our club. He encouraged us to continue to participate in EREY.
Shana Reilly-Pond announced that PP Liz Schuck had forwarded an email to her, with an invitation from the Coastal Rep for our club to attend the upcoming performance of The Addams Family. Laurie Stein is their new marketing rep, and she is willing to give us a 25% discount on each ticket. The show starts July 28 and runs through August 27. Club Administration Director Renee Lewis will send information out to club members to see who would like to go!
Joe Brennan shared a flier about an upcoming fundraiser for the USS Potomac and End Polio Now. On Thursday, September 7th, in the evening you can dine on the USS Potomac, and cruise the bay. $100 per person. If we were to sell the boat out, we would potentially raise $3750 which would be matched by Gates Foundation and bring in a total $11,000 towards ending polio. This event is in lieu of Joe’s annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser for this purpose.
John Evans made one more plea for a host family for our incoming exchange student, Rafael. He pointed out that the high school, in the past, had been getting too many exchange students, so last year began using the same criteria that our Club uses. He believes the high school will only host the two Rotary students this year. He indicated either he or Mary Rogren can help with anyone interested in finding out what it means to be a host family. John and Larkin will be one of the other student’s host families, Louise from France.
Message from our President
President Warren referenced a flier he put on our lunch tables, announcing PERLS training on Saturday, July 29th. He also mentioned that Dianne Bobko had published the latest version of the FogHorn; and that on our webpage there are great links, including one to Rotary International.
President Warren started a new recognition…Member in Focus…as one of the ideas generated from last week’s Start, Stop, Keep.
He highlighted Rusty Shana Reilly-Pond, and shared that she joined Rotary because it offered everything she was looking for in a group, including the high quality of it’s members. Her favorite project has been the dictionary project, and her proudest accomplishment is her two-year focus on addressing homelessness, a passion of hers.Next, President Warren shared another Rotary video with us, this one on why people become members of Rotary (#rotarystory), from the Rotary International Website.
He wants to continue to highlight who we are and emphasized his motto for this year…fun, fellowship, and service.
Next President Warren called Paul Wrubel up to make a special presentation. Paul said there are some things in Rotary he has to do, some he likes to do, and some he loves and really enjoys doing, and this was one, presenting Past President Lizzie with her new badge!
Warren then introduced two additional board members:
Ed Daniels for World Community Service
Mary Rogren for Youth Service
Charise McHugh will continue in role of Vocational Chair

He also announced we now are in need of a Sergeant at Arms, and to notify him if interested.
