Program: Just Call Me Fie!  Our Rotary Exchange Student Reports on Her Year in HMB
Article by Susan Kealey

Bon Voyage!  We will miss you, Anne Sofie Kristensen

Fie asked us to sign her flag and saying that the time flew by. Now she only has only one week left. A few of her thoughts on her activities while here:
  • Sports proved to be a good way to get to know people. She played volleyball and soccer.
  • She chose a rigorous scholastic schedule--she showed us a picture of her homework for a year--it was a foot tall!
  • She was able to participate in the graduation ceremony even though she didn't have enough credits to graduate--thanks to John Evans and the CUSD Administration Rotary members.
  • Fie had two great host families; you could tell she really appreciated them.  She shared many photos of her adventures with both families.
  • Travels--Texas ( made her glad to be in Bay Area), Sedona, a road trip, Mexico-- even more of Mitone's relatives. Lake Almanor, skiing, Hawaii with 45 exchange students. Loads of terrific memories.
  • Fie's third family is the other exchange students.  These were kids from all over the world, they've traveled together, met, stayed in touch, compared notes--from Fie's description, they made a deep connection and she'll count them as close friends for a long time.
  • In considering what the possible negatives of the trip were--she said some might think this was a crazy thing to do.  Some of the thoughts were, she'd "lose a year".  The reality was not even close, she's gained some much more than if she had stayed home. For instance, she can talk to a crowd comfortably; she's learned to eat vegetables and wash her own clothes. The experience has changed her and helped her mature into the confident woman she is.
  • Fie made a point to thank her host families, John Evans and Rotary. She also shared a big thank you from her mom as well
.
Q & A
  • What are your plans when you return?  Fie has 2 more years of high school, she plans to go to college after.
  • Has your year here changed any of your plans for your future?  At home she was in a business high school with plans to go into a business career.  While here she found her artistic side.  It opened her eyes to other possibilities.
  • Will you go to England to study, now that your English is so good?  It's a possibility.
  • What other languages do you speak?   She says she spoke German, but needs a refresher.  She also speaks Danish, of course, and English.
  • What will you miss?  Being able to go to Safeway at midnight and being so close to San Francisco.
  • What could this club do for other exchange students?  Providing a list of names and pictures of club members would be very helpful

Happy/Crappy News –  Dr. Joy Enriquez announced that the board of Rotacare has decided it is time to close down.  Over the past year the need has been diminishing as Affordable Care is taking care of most people’s medical needs. Dave Dickson added  Where the clinic used to average 35 people a week, they have been averaging 7 or fewer a week.  And last week approximately 16 volunteers waited for the first hour before anyone showed up.  It is indeed happy news!  Joy's funds for her birthday will most likely be given to our Foundation.
