Ralph Ely

Ralph was born in Indianapolis and is married to Christine who was born in Germany.  As he was vacationing in Mallorca recently, he reflected on how he is the luckiest guy in the world.

Ralph was born and raised on a farm in Indiana and he was the oldest of 8 children.  He did everything a kid would do being raised on a farm.  He remembers picking tomatoes for 25 cents a bushel.

In high school he was the class treasurer and graduated from a class of 87 (today the school has 1200 students).  Ralph graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Psychology and was in the ROTC program.

He was in the military and advance infantry basic training and was chosen to be part of the honor guard.  His basic training unit had 207 of the 212 men sent over to Vietnam.  As part of the honor guard he was part of the group that was involved in all of the honor guard activities.  He also became the historian for the honor guard during his stent there.  Ralph reflected the freedom he had with this assignment as he was able to attend bar at night where many of the Anti-Vietnam protesters hung out.

Once he was discharged from the Honor Guard he spent two years driving around the country.   After that he began his real estate career with he has been doing for 44 years.  He stated the real estate profession is an odd profession as you get to meet people from all walks of life.  He is puzzled by the perception of realtors by many in the general public.  He ended with a story about how an individual told him he wanted to purchase a large home in Moss Beach to replicate his childhood experience and then never showed up or was seen again.

Nate Rey

Nate is a Coastsider and has been on the Coast since going to school here in the first grade.  He left to go to school and came back 5 ½ years ago to work for the Half Moon Bay Brewery.  He is now the lead brewer for them as he worked himself up into this position over this period.  Nate mentioned he was a wine lover until he became involved in brewing beers, especially IPAs.

Today he came to talk about brewing beer.  He distributed a sheet showing the brewing process and brought samples of two kinds of beer that was offered to those interested at the end of the meeting.   Current, IPAs now make up 28% of all beers being brewed.

He took the Rotary audience through the entire brewing process.  It was very obvious from this demonstration that he loves where he works, loves brewing beer.  He is able to serve very young beer at the Brewery since it comes directly from Brewery location at the restaurant
