The annual Oktoberfest meeting was held at Cameron’s  restaurant.  Joe Brennan and Bill Johnston adroitly handled the greeter responsibilities. Since we were lacking unofficial flag, Warren Barmore was forced to lead the pledge to a pair of American flag boxing gloves. It worked. In honor of world polio day (October 23) Joe Brennan read a poem by Richard Daggert:

These are my braces,
They set me free
But, these are my braces,
They are not me.

Without my braces,
I sit in my chair,
without my braces,
life is not fair.

But, put on my braces,
And I’m just like the others
Put on my braces,
And I run like my brothers.

Well, not exactly,
I’ll have to admit, no,
Well, not exactly,
’ cause I had polio.

Warren told us a story about looking at a picture from the 1950s of a roomful of iron lungs. Two weeks later there was a power blackout and everyone died. “We make a difference.”
Guests included Savas Shulkin, Dave’s wife Marla, Bill’s wife Ayn, EJ’s wife Rose together with EJ’s neighbors and Steve’s wife Kathy.

When it came time to share good news, Diane was first up to report on seeing the movie “1st Man” about Neil Armstrong. She reported that Neil’s family worked hard with the movie writers, directors and producers and that according to Bo this is the most accurate movie depiction of the technology involved. For Diane, despite years of listening to the stories, this was the first time that she felt like she had really experienced the cacophony followed by absolute silence that characterize these launches.

Bill Clear spoke briefly about the recent outbreak of AFM (acute flaccid myelitis) which is an infection with consequences similar to polio. Apparently, there is concern that this could evolve into an epidemic warranting a campaign similar to that which Rotary has waged against polio.

Pres. Paul continued his campaign to acknowledge the volunteers at the Pumpkin Festival with “chowder head” certificates.
