Program: PUMPKIN CARVING FUN!

Then came the program: Each table had two medium-sized pumpkins, donated by Half Moon Bay’s “Farmer John” Muller. Prez Liz Schuck put on a CD of spooky Halloween Night sound effects, Rotarians donned aprons and picked up carving tools also distributed to the tables, and teamed up to unleash their Halloween-inspired creativity. Everyone bent over their pumpkins, and Halloween fun thoroughly haunted Rotary lunch that day.
Charise McHugh's pumpkin looked like it had carved itself, as it spat pumpkin seeds out onto the table. Wes Burgess sported a Tom & Pete’s pumpkin shirt. Steve Wilson hunched over his pumpkin, busily scraping as he created an “old-school” traditional jack-o’-lantern. Catherine Yaque had the unique idea of carving the Rotary wheel into her pumpkin. Linda Crose-Andersen got abstract with her pumpkin, carving a design into it that she further enhanced with scary-looking black plastic spiders. Richard White gave his pumpkin a face. Heather Bodeman was officially welcomed by joining creative forces with Dianne Bobko and Warren Barmore, for a pumpkin face that even had a hairdo.
Who’da thought Rose Serdy and Bill Johnston could get as ghoulish as they did with their pumpkin, giving it a face and then adding a finishing touch of a dagger a la Macbeth? Caroline Gossart carved the whole story of her exchange trip on her pumpkin, by giving it half-moon eyes and the words “Rotary” and “USA (pointing arrow) Belgium.”
Eric Shapira combined sweet and chewy for his pumpkin, giving it a Tootsie Pop nose and Tootsie Roll eyes that bugged out. Warren Barmore's pumpkin, with wide-open and rolling eyes, was “what I look like when Pumpkin Festival is over.” Ralph Ely channeled Dave Andrews with a cigar-chomping pumpkin.
The finished masterpieces were displayed for the delighted applause by all. It was decided that first prize would go to Warren Barmore, second to Catherine Yaque and third to Caroline Gossart. But in true trick-or-treat spirit, everyone got a prize.

THIS WEEK AT OUR MEETING
Pledge of Allegiance: Mary Corcoran led the flag salute. Inspirational Thought: Giving an inspirational message appropriate for Halloween, Millie Golder drew from “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown:” when Lucy declared she would never again write to that “stupid pumpkin,” Linus noted that there were certain things one just did not discuss, including religion, politics and the Great Pumpkin.
Happy/Crappy News
There was a lot of happy/crappy news, mostly happy: Exchange student Caroline Gossart noted that this was homecoming week and that she’d enjoyed the dance and was looking forward to the upcoming big homecoming assembly. She also enjoyed a recent visit to a local Japanese restaurant. Ginger Minoletti came upon a fundraising/amazon site that listed the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay as a beneficiary. Kevin O’Brien noted that for the first time he’d had to miss Pumpkin Festival this year and so he made a $50 donation. (But he really broke even, since he added that he had just won $50 at a golf match.) Charise McHugh noted that Small Business Saturday in Half Moon Bay was to be featured on a MSNBC segment.
In other news Rotarians mentioned the upcoming Table of Plenty and two weekends of the Holiday House, which will benefit Coastside nonprofits. Linda Crose-Anderson had just learned that she was going to be grandmother for the third time.

Honorary Membership and Paul Harris Fellowship Pins
Next came some “totally awesome” news when Paul Wrubel called Heather Bodmann up front to be named an honorary member of the club, having been involved for more than 30 years with Dan.

Kevin O'Brien then called up Irwin Cohen, Dianne Bobko and Joe Brennan to receive updated Paul Harris Fellowship pins, with new sapphires.
Announcements
Warren Barmore had a few things to auction off that were left over from this year’s Pumpkin Festival: some cans of chowder and some bread bowls.
Linda Crose-Andersen is seeking tutors for local youth who are first-generation English speakers. The local Interact club is planning a springtime event which will benefit Shelter Box.

John Evans pointed out that the Interact District Conference is scheduled Nov. 8 in Foster City, and recapped Half Moon Bay Interact club’s participation in Pumpkin Festival: They ran a booth and did spin art. That drew more than 30 participants and for which Interactors volunteered at two-hour shifts.
Teresa Adam invited Rotarians to participate in the Big Coyote/Little Coyote mentoring program with Pilarcitos High School students.
Joe Brennan noted that, unfortunately, the spaghetti feed planned next week in support of Rotary’s work against polio had to be cancelled due to lack of signups. Discussion followed around how to boost signups in the future.
Charise McHugh mentioned an upcoming golf tournament event in mid-November to support firefighters who are battling cancer.

Mary Corcoran said that mock job interviewers are needed for the Rotary and the Chamber at the High School event at Pescadero High School on Nov. 14.
Then attention was given to a weighty matter: Bill Johnston called on Dave Andrews to step on a scale to check his current weight, and called on Rotarians who had made cash pledges depending on how many pounds Dave lost after 84 days, to pay up.
