After our regular meeting (see below), EJ takes over the entertainment setting the stage for Octoberfest by reprising its history for us. It began as a wedding celebration party by King Ludwig I and his princess bride Theresa von Sachsen-Hildburghausen who were married on the 12th of October 1810 in Bavaria and invited the population of Munich to help them celebrate in the fields outside the city gates...and the tradition persists to this day with the celebration growing from a day to a week and now is considered a month-long celebration. The month can be July, August September and/or October anywhere in Germany or around the World. The music developed into its own type, Octoberfest Music. The toast is important as are the songs so EJ had a multiple page handout ready for us to share. We began by practicing the toast with its Ho! Ho! Ho!....Prost!
He called his wife, Rose, up front to demonstrate the "Folk Dress" (not "costume"). Girls traditionally show their wealth by having stome assets sewn to the front of their bodices where they dangle while dancing. Fellows demonstrate their strength/wealth by the display of an eagle feather of goats beard from the band of their hats...size matters!
EJ pointed out that the focal point of the German Woman is her cleavage, "they are proud of their assets/alps." For Ger Men it is their calf muscles which indicate their strength/wealth/prowess.

The apron is an important element in the woman's dress and its strings may be tied in one of four way each giving a signal of her status;
Tied on the right = taken/married, leave me alone
Tied on the left = Available, talk to me
Tied in front center = virgin
Tied in back = widow or waitress (so bow won't be in the way)
EJ said this is not unique to Germany but is manifest in many cultures, such as a flower behind the right or left ear in Polynesia and the practice in Japan of women painting their front teeth black after marriage = unattractive.

EJ quoted the annually published lost and found list from this year's Octoberfest which was quite amusing including as it did false teeth, wedding rings, crutches, etc. but it lacked the bra count of previous years.
With this cultural orientation he launched into the sing along with:
1) Happy Wanderer
2) Wooden Heart
3) Beer Barrel Polka (Skoda Lasky its original name and origin)
4) Edelweiss (Sound of Music)
5) Lili Marleen (Red Lantern)
6) Que Sera Sera
9) She's Too Fat for Me ("He's" Too Fat for Me rebellion verse could be heard)
12) In Heaven There is no Beer - Polka!

EJ ended with a number of quotes about Beer:
Lyndon B Johnson's about being sorry for those who do not drink.
GB Shaw is credited with:
When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's get drunk and go to heaven!
Lena Horn sang a long running Shaefer Beer commercial with the repetitious message:
"Schaefer the one beer you have when you are having more than one."
HL Menkin's "24 hours in a day, 24 bottles of beer in a case," a coincidence _ I don't think so!
GB Shaw "Go to heaven"
Ben Franklin's "Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy!"
(Note from Joe B. - For more quotes about this topic, just go to: http://www.etni.org.il/quotes/drink.htm )
EJ wrapped it all up with a rousing sing along of That's Amore!
President Dave C Andrews thanked member Nate Rey of the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company for hosting our luncheon
and such a good lunch it was!.

President what's his name called the meeting to order and with hands over our hearts we faced out over the harbor searching for the flag we were pledging our allegiance to. The nearest and largest flag was a Pirate Jolly Roger high on a yacht's mast but there were a few stars and stripes fluttering a bit further afield (abay?).
The thought for the day was given by Ginger Minoletti, a medley of travel quotes each more clever that the one before which drew a standing ovation as we were on our feet.
