Program: KAT KHALED STUDIOS OF ORINDA

Kat is a contemporary portait photographer specializing in women, taking beautiful portraits on the fly.  She is passionate about how to feel beautiful and passionateabout working with women.

Why women? Because the men-centric media is so full of marginalizing messages and images of women. Together with her techniques she is able to take amazing photos of who you really are. Embrace your emotions, be unjudgingly celebrated for it; be yourself!

She believes in a very positive approach and path for women in general and her subjects in specific.
This includes quieting your inner critic, practicing inner affirmation with positive messages, positive self talk, and affirmations. Self love is the key to self value ascending and is a beneficial daily practice.
She offered Paulett’s story as an example of the success of her methods. She had lost one hundred pounds, hadn’t let herself be photographed and feared the photo session...but loved the photos!
The shoot equals the ultimate body positive, pampered experience for clients to celebrate themselves the rest of the day...and rest of their lives!

How to take beautiful portraits with tools you have on hand:
Light
Soft vs. Hard - harsh, high contrast; soft lighting gives the best results…for example Half Moon Bay’s frequent diffuse light is a wonderful asset.
In hard light look for shade and diffusing elements like overhead foliage of improvise a diffuser such as a sheet to umbrella.
In dark conditions look for reflections or create them to light subject. Another suggestion was standing on a reflective surface such as concrete or opposite a reflective wall, fence or vehicle.

Snazzy tools
Diffusers for low light flash usage softens the effect and brings out detail. Deflectors direct the flash up to be reflected down from the ceiling greatly softening its effect. Thises are small and easy to use.
Posing for flattering images
position subject 45 degrees to one side of the other, not straight on to the camera
Shift wieght to the back hip or foot
tuck the booty under of back for best appearance
Give the hands a job not dangling limp like a scarecrow. hand in pocket, on shoulder, holding something or poised
Connection to photographer is important because it is easily read by viewers
Drop that front shoulder
Chin down and out for best angle/result

Basic Composition
Rule of thirds; subject 1/3 into frame
Low angles are not flattering
Photographing little subjects, get down on their level
Rules are made to be broken, beautiful emotions and happiness trump all else!

The photographer should shoot lots of frames but give it up after a while, it is also important to be in the moment and snap a mental image
Important to review your results right away; Keep the best, Delete the rest!

Editing can enhance the photo work. Kat suggests PIXLR a free program for phone or computer editing.

She also reminds us to print our best photographs regularly to reinforce why we do it and have tangible reminders at hand. She recommends #printyourphotographs
Make a commitment to print regularly like quarterly or at least yearly, such as making an album for Christmas, every year, of your best work

Exist in photographs: #existinphotographs
People avoid photos however they are transformative; they are changing self image - changing lives!
They teach children to love themselves…making it all worthwhile!

Remember when photographers do group shoots they always get the best results when, after the more formal shots, they say “now act like you like each other” and people get goofy and real

Q&A
How do you suggest we shoot dogs? Set up a confined space, light it well and get low to capture their essence

What do you recommend for photo print storage? Get archival storage boxes and materials. Index saved work by date and subject.

She reminds us Edit, only save the best and go back and edit more severely!

Go out and shoot magnificent photographs!

September 15, 2016 Meeting Recap

THIS WEEK AT OUR MEETING

Greeters:    Robin Jeffs (past president), and Charise McHugh
Pledge of Allegiance:  Vicar Michael Arase-Barham
Inspirational Thought:  Led by Charise McHugh --- said a prayer to “Bless and Keep Dan Bodeman.”    Charise also noted the sad news about the Mark Andermahr, former owner of HMB Bakery, who sadly took his life this week.

Guests   Caroline Gossart – our Rotary exchange student.   Caroline shared her wonderful week, including spending time with new friends in Pescadero and meeting up with old friends, counselors from Rotary in Belgium.   (While visiting the surrounds of Pescadero, Caroline was particularly amazed at seeing the Redwood trees– as Belgium doesn’t have such large trees!)    And, she was excited to go to Alcatraz with the Belgium visitors (later on Thursday.)

Tribute to Dan Bodmann who sadly passed away this week . . . . .  The first half of our meeting was spent remembering Dan Bodmann who was a Rotary member for over 30+ years, and truly lived the Rotary passion for service.
Liz Schuck noted that many photos of Dan have been shared this past week – and she is pulling together a photo tribute, so please continue to share.   Liz shared that an open house will be held for Dan on Sept 25 at PCC from 1:00 – 4:00 in Dan’s memory.
Before Dan passed away, Liz was pleased to have given Dan a crystal Rosewood plaque, a  Paul Harris award (3 rubies and gold), and a “Paul Harris + 8” award.
In Dan’s memory, Irwin passed around a Lagunitas IPA --- and we toasted Dan!  Irwin remembered working with Dan to send a sea train of medical supplies to Russia.  (The shipping container was lost for a while, and Irwin and Dan shared a lot of laughs reminiscing about their efforts to find it!)

Ginger Minoletti remembered enjoying a glass of wine with Dan in his last moments --- and shared the following poem:

I’M FREE
Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard him call;
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day.
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way;
I found that place at the close of the day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered job.
A Friendship shared a laugh, a kiss;
Ah yes, these things, I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full, I savored much;
Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.
Perhaps my time seems all to brief;
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, He set me free.
(Author: Linda Jo Jackson)

Rosie Fontana remembered collaborating on Foghorn notes with Dan.  She remembers him as a gentle soul . . . .
Kevin O’Brien remembered that Dan often took long car trips to visit family – and remembered that Dan was in a bad car accident, but recovered, and drove again on many more trips.
John Evans recounted that his daughters were friends with Dan’s daughters in elementary school --- so they shared lots of memories together over the years raising their beautiful children . . .
Ralph Ely has a special memory of Dan, as Dan was his sponsor in joining Rotary.
Bill Johnson shared memories of traveling to Mexico with Dan to do a Rotary project . . .  (and Bill remembers that Dan did the “drinking” for Bill on the trip . . . )   Bill recalled that Dan played basketball and wrestled --- and “combined” his approaches (e.g. basketball sometimes became a wrestling event . . .)
Susan Kealey was on Dan’s BOD (1996) when he was president.  He held the meetings at his house and opened the Board meetings with wine . . . . She remembers her first year at Pumpkin Festival and sharing duties with Dan.   “They” accidentally spilled many gallons of hot oil in the IDES parking lot --- but no one noticed, thank goodness!

Happy and Not So HappyNews

John Evans continued with Caroline’s (our exchange student’s) sharing for the week.   The Belgium exchange counselors spent the night at their house.   John recounted that he and Larkin had to step up and drive the Belgiums to their next destination (?) – but they came home and found that Caroline had cleaned up all of the dishes and related messes!
Charise MeHugh announced that tonight was the last night of Passagiata.  She said that she was giving away passes for free.  Charise also announced that there has been some forgiveness from the City of HMB surrounding business licenses, so those with businesses in HMB should be getting their notifications shortly.

September Birthday Celebrations!
Teresa Adam celebrated the September birthdays honoring Liz Schuck, Charise McHugh and Mary Rogren.  The birthday celebrants all received Minnie Mouse ears!

EP arranged for a Happy Birthday celebration for Liz who celebrated her birthday last week.   EP brought cake, and we all sang and celebrated!

Announcements

Liz offered her special thanks to Dianne Bobko for presiding over the last meeting --- and special thanks to Renee Lewis and Cathie Monozon for their wonderful presentation last week on the Amazon.

Liz honored Christine Quinn for organizing our “Olympic” events at La Nebbia.   (Liz received her $100,000 chocolate bar.)  Thank you, Christine!
Ginger Minoletti is looking for possible social events for the club.  (We haven’t had an activity for a little over a year.)  Beach Blanket Babylon is a possibility.       Mitone Griffith suggested coordinating events with the Pacifica club.  Shana Reilly-Pond suggested a bowling party.

Shana Reilly-Pond, our Community Service Director, is looking for opportunities where Rotary can make a difference in our community.    Shana is looking at the possibility of coordinating with other organizations to provide support to “Dignity on Wheels” – which provides showers, laundry services, etc. to the homeless.  (The Lutheran Church sponsors two visits a month to HMB.  Teresa Adam, the President of the Lutheran Church, noted that the Church needs help with covering costs such as electricity, etc.)
Shana is also looking for various opportunities and was inspired by a group that puts together “gift bags” for people living on the streets.   Shana is looking for volunteer to help with a possible effort in HMB.
Shana remarked in her comments that mental illness hits all levels of our community, and she is saddened by the loss of Mark Andermahr.    She noted that mental illness is a major contributor of issues for many in our community, including the homeless.
On a side note, Charise McHugh commented that as she ponders the death of Mark Andermahr, we often take for granted that in retirement, we are happy.  We need to be aware of (and comfort) friends and family who are going through a transition.
Shana also mentioned that she is heading up the Dictionary distribution to 3rd graders – and plans to move up the event to early December.
Paul Wrubel is looking for opportunities to attract new members for our Rotary club.   He is exploring opportunities to involve spouses.  He is also looking for ways to induct local “organizations” as organizational Rotary members, who could send guests to our meetings on an ongoing basis.  Organizational members could include Cal Fire and the Sheriff’s department.  Paul, in his role on the Educational Committee for the Chamber is also looking for ways to coordinate and unite efforts in the community on educational efforts.
Joe Brennan, who serves as World Service Committee chair, needs help with organizing efforts from our young 3rd grade visitor from last week who wants to provide school supplies to children in Africa.   Please see Joe if you are interested in joining his efforts.  Joe is also interested in organizing an effort to arrange a Rotary project in Mexico.   Please see him on this project . . .
Linda Croce-Anderson, our Youth Service’s Director, is looking for ways to expand our presence in the schools, including possibly expanding Interact to Pilarcitos High School or Cunha Middle School.   Since the involvement of our youth is limited and short lived, Linda is looking for ways to expand our presence with our youth.
Rosi Fontana, our Secretary, noted that current attendance on Thursday is 35-40%. Please spread the word that we need our fellow Rotarians to attend our meetings!

Final Comments before the Program
Liz noted that Warren Barmore will soon be enlisting our club to volunteer during Pumpkin Festival.
Budget news:  Liz announced that our Board agreed to raise dues $5 per month given budget requirements.
On September 22, please come to lunch at the HMB Brewery for Octoberfest --- and enjoy our entertainment, EJ!
And, please contact Liz to participate on our fishing event with the Purple Heart Anglers organization for which we raise money at our Magic of the Coastside last April this upcoming weekend, September 24 for our disabled vets --- either by sending off the fishing crew at 6am, or by helping to serve lunch.  She needs 15 volunteers.
