Program: OCTOBERFEST at the HMB Brewery with EJ Dieterle
President Liz Schuck opened the program by presenting EJ Dieterle with a great themed gift of a bottle wearing a pair of Lederhosen.
EJ Proceeded wearing his Roland Accordion proceeded to tell and demonstrate the musical history of Octoberfest.
He first explained the traditional costumes; the Drindl for women as worn by his wife Rose focusing on the upper body and Lederhosen he was wearing for men, focusing on the lower body.
The first piece he played is the unofficial anthem of Octoberfest; Roll Out the Barrel or the Beer Barrel Polka which was composed in 1927 and popular as an instrumental called Polka of Modrany until the lyrics were written in 1934 and the name changed to Skoda Iasky (Unrequited Love. We all sang along and belted out the last chorus line …"for the gang’s all here!” setting the stage or mood for the singalong which followed.
EJ mentioned that the gang was not all here, noting there passing of long time favorite Rotarian Dan Bodman whom he had visited near the end playing his old favorite Danny Boy which stirred Dan from his repose to reach, out hold EJ’s hand, open his eyes and smile.
Octoberfest is a type of Music and is in season from July through November. It is composed to have fun and not be judgemental! which was the segue to his playing Happy Wanderer
Next was EJ’s quiz, the question was what is his most important piece of equipment? Guesses poured forth from the crowd but he had to demonstrate for us to understand. The answer was the glad stand (cup holder) on the shaft of his music stand to hold his beer while playing.
He then led us in the traditional toast who’s words I did record so had to look up on line:
Eins, zwei, drei, g'suffa! Zicke, zacke, zicke, zacke, hoi, hoi, hoi, Zicke, zacke, zicke, zacke, hoi, hoi, hoi. Prosit.”
(German for "Don't worry, be happy, one, two, three, drink, cheers and a bunch of nonsensical sounds that might be shouted at a football/ soccer game.)
Next song was Muss I Denn or Wooden Heart made famous here by Elvis Presley’s recording it
Octoberfest originated in 1810 and this year is being celebrated for the 183rd time (minus wartime years etc.). It is a 16 to 18 day celebration in September because the weather is better than October. it originated in Wiessen, meaning meadow, when Prince Ludwig married princess Theresa of Saxony in Theresa’s Meadow.
Statistically: Octoberfest is celebrated by six million people during those two weeks. For food last year they ate 114 oxen, 500,000 chicken and 1.9 million gallons of beer. This was mainly in huge tents holding 10,000 people provided by the Munich based brewers. For restroom facilities they had 1,500 “seating arrangements plus a kilometer of pee trough. The top three International attendees come from Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Munich for those two weeks is considered the northern most city in Italy! The last weekend of Octoberfest is Italian Weekend.
The 2,900 lost and found items often tell a funny history of the event: 600 passports, 300 smart phones, a wheel chair, crutches, lederhosen, toliet brush, prosthetic limb, license plate etc.
EJ next played Edelweiss with all singing from the words he had initially passed around.
At this point EJ announced the ODDtoberfest event he will be starring in at the Odd Fellows Lodge at 7PM next Thursday the 29th. All are welcome but you must RSVP to attend at http://www.hmb-ioof.org/calendar/399
Lili MArleen was the next enthusiastically sung song a favorite of soldiers in WWII.
Followed by a crowd favorite by this time the audience was really coming into stride and belted out That’s Amore! This was made famous by Deano “Crocetti” Martin. EJ related how at a District Conference a few years ago an Italian GSE team sang That’s Amore to everyone with GUSTO!
Next was Que Sera Sera which imparts a bit of universal wisdom
This was followed by the last song, what EJ says is the current favorite of his performances; the Too Fat, not too Fat Polka (best selling record by Arthur Godfry)
The audience went crazy with their Thank thou EJ & Rose applause!
Big Thanks also to Nate Rey of HMB Brewing Co. for hosting this fun and traditional event.

THIS WEEK AT OUR MEETING
A happy, toe-tapping, musical afternoon awaited members of the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay at today’s luncheon. Appropriately held at the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, it was the annual Octoberfest Singalong, which featured our own EJ Dieterle looking dapper in lederhosen and playing his sprightly accordion music for us to sing along with.
After everyone had a chance to eat, EJ launched with gusto into the music, beginning with “Happy Wanderer” (“I love to go a-wandering, Along the mountain track, And as I go I love to sing, My knapsack on my back. Val-deri, Val-dera, Val-deri, Val-der ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-he-ha”) and so on.
EJ took a moment to tell of his recent visit to Dan Bodmann, during which he brought his accordion and played “Danny Boy” to him. He played it again for the club, to the rapt attention of all present.
Then, having handed out the lyrics and original languages of the songs he would play, EJ began. He sprinkled his presentation with traditions, culture and history of Octoberfest, such as how many different languages you would likely hear during Octoberfest celebrations in Germany – not to mention yodeling! He also led the room in lifting up glasses to toast Octoberfest.
His next song was “Wooden Heart,” made famous by Elvis Presley. Then he gave a little more of a “history lesson” about Octoberfest, such as the 1.5 million (I think) gallons of beer consumed in Germany during that holiday. (“What we (Americans) call a glass is a joke,” he said.) He gave a little more information about Octoberfest traditions and rituals such as seating arrangements, and the millions of people who participate in them.
His next song was the well-received “Beer Barrel Polka” (“Roll out the barrel, We’ll have a barrel of fun,”) and then he mentioned the upcoming Octoberfest planned by the Odd Fellows in Half Moon Bay, at their lodge on Main Street. Joe Brennan will email out information about it, he said, and Dave Dickson will be there with his home-brew.
The music then turned to the nostalgic, gentle ballad “Edelweiss,” made famous in the movie “The Sound of Music.” At EJ’s invitation, Mary Corcoran sang much of the song solo, with club members backing her up.
Then came “Lili Marleen,” a song which has been translated into dozens of languages and had been sung by both sides during World War II. Then the language shifted to Italian with Dean Martin’s “That’s Amore” (“When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore”) and EJ gave a true vocal flourish as he headed into each chorus.
After mentioning that he will don his lederhosen to play several more Octoberfest gigs in the next few weeks, EJ led club members into “Que Sera Sera” (“Que sera sera, whatever will be, will be”) and rounded off the Octoberfest entertainment with the lively English polka “Too Fat, Not Too Fat” to delighted applause.
The meeting ended with a call for more help for the coming weekend’s Purple Heart Anglers Fishing Trip out of Pillar Point Harbor for disabled veterans. About 15 people were needed to help set up lunch at the Legion for participants, and as usual, several Rotarians stepped up.
