Program: Getting Ready for Magic - Focus: Sponsors

To begin a program centered on this year's Magic of the Coastside, Liz Schuck kicked things off by discussing sponsors for the event.
Cards were on the tables, for individual Rotarians to fill out their names or names and contact information of suggested sponsors. For a few minutes everyone conferred at their tables, coming up with ideas for sponsors. Elizabeth reminded everyone that the event is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay Foundation.  (Editor's Note:  This year our primary donation will be to the Purple Heart Anglers to sponsor a fishing day for 30 disabled veterans from the Coastside.  This organization was founded by Coastsider Randy Houston to honor his brother who was a Purple Heart Veteran.)

Elizabeth also listed specific parts of the event for which the committee chairs need help, such as setup, takedown, food preparation or setup for the dinner itself. For example, she said, Linda Crose-Andersen, who is Chair for the event food, will need people to sign up in shifts to help with food preparation for the event. Linda is planning to approach local restaurants about donating appetizers for the event.
Kevin O'Brien will need help with general setup for the event. Anyone with access to pickup trucks was asked to help on Saturday morning and evening respectively, to help with setup and breakdown.

There were also requests for people to sign up for specific duties like bartending, items for the auction, public relations and ticket sales. Rotarians were also reminded about getting their nomination forms completed and turned into Dianne the Service Above Self recognition. Elizabeth asked everyone present to think about what kinds of things they would like to help with, and to sign up for whatever they can do.

Ginger Minoletti asked Rotarians to approach businesses such as restaurants for donations of gift cards. Kevin suggested distributing remember-the-date cards and notices to local businesses or organizations, to highlight the event.

Entertainment will once again be provided by the Blue Street Jazz Band. There was also discussion about Fund-a-Need, around such things as Rotary's polio efforts.
The theme of the event will be New Orleans Mardi Gras. The color scheme will be Mardi Gras colors such as dark green, gold-yellow and lavender-purple with a splash of sparkle. Tickets will be priced at $75.

More details will follow as they are decided, such as group ticket prices. Signups for the  areas to help in will go out again in a couple of weeks.

Pres. Dave called the meeting to order.  Doug Adams led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance and

Kevin O'Brien read from RI President Ravi’s January message in the Rotarian magazine – which by the way all members should at least take a glance at.

“Every impact you have as a Rotarian, individually and through your club, is multiplied by the power of our numbers.  When you feed one person who is hungry, when you educate one person who is illiterate, when you protect one child from disease, the impact may seem small.  It is anything but. For it is only through the power of numbers, through the power of our individual actions and gifts, that we can have the impact we seek: to truly Be a Gift to the World.

Happy/Crappy News

Charise McHugh  was full of news reporting that we are at 136% on snow pack as of 1/5/16 and was sad to have longtime employee Melissa leaving the Chamber, but happy to welcome Heather Gibbbons from Pescadero.  And a new social media guy too.
Rosi Fontana – had a wonderful Tamale making evening  with the Bobko's Family  (from Magic 2015 Auction).  She also had carpal tunnel surgery.
John Evans hosted the our District exchange students and passed around a card with all of the pictures.  They had helped us in the Chowder bowl prep for Pumpkin Festival.  Last year’s student, Fie, also sent a Christmas card that he shared with us.
Steve Anderson is back from Florida where his youngest daughter is having twins.  He and Bonnie made an offer on a house close by; so they can help out. Brian Lee was grateful he had the opportunity to hear President Ravi and thanked Kevin O'Brien for the ride and fellowship with Dianne and Bo Bobko.  Ginger Minoletti also chimed in that the ride with Joe Brennan and Stacy and Doug was part of the pleasure of the evening.  All of those who attended the dinner in San Jose with 3 past RI Presidents talked about the evening.  Don’t miss it next year!
Charise McHugh told one more story about her exploding eggs!  Apparently she is not to be trusted with just hard boiling eggs.

Announcements
Stacy Trevenon shared some thoughts on our Essay contest – more to come.
Ginger Minoletti gave an update on Dan Bodmann - he is at home and making progress.  It will be a long road to recovery.  But he does like to have visitors – good time is between 11 and 6 pm.  Call first – 726-4123.  He doesn’t really need anything but company.  And that also gives Heather a break.

Dave's Weekly Quiz
President Dave had an interesting point of view on big game hunting – I am sure not all were in agreement.

Name the African Big Five and the Alaskan Big Seven.  Any of you readers who were not at the meeting and can name them (without googling) may get a prize.  If for no other reason to prove that you read this far!wink
