July 24 Meeting Recap
It's Summer! and attendance is light. Everyone's out having fun and the rest of us are hanging out with our Rotarian friends for lunch. Our speaker today had to cancel, so president Dianne took the opportunity to revisit one of our visioning exercises.
After passing out more "Light Up Rotary" pins, president Dianne called the meeting to order and Irwin Cohen led us in signing the National Anthem. An inspirational thought was shared by Charise who also acted as Sergeant at Arms welcoming Rotarians and guests to lunch.Inspirational Thought - by Charise McHugh
Dear Lord,
Teach all of us to practice tolerance and acceptance of our fellow man. Not only of race, color, or religion, but help us not be so quick to judge, even in our own community. Allow us not to “assume” about people because of where they live, or what they drive, or where they work, or what they wear. Grant us the patience to learn about the person’s heart and passion before sticking them into a preconceived slot. Rotarians, by nature, are probably the best to lead by example in this arena. It is something the greater world and our smaller community should embrace and Rotarians can lead the way.

Happy / Crappy News
Welcome back Doug Adams, he'd been away from Rotary for some time because of his back issues and surgery. He's happy to be back!
Dianne has been busy. She and Bo were in NYC doing the Circle Tour in the evening, Bo went to work doing autographs as a famous astronaut while Dianne went to a show. After New York, Dianne flew to LA to work before heading back to the coast.
Mitone shared that she and Phil are spending the next 2.5 weeks without children as her parents took them on vacation to the east coast. They're enjoying their own vacation at home. Joe Brennan announced that his wife, Jan Tiura, retired tugboat captain and photographer will have a talk at the Odd Fellows Hall on Aug 1 7PM about her career on tugboats and her photography. We've asked Joe to invite Jan to the club to do a presentation in the near future. Joe also announced that his badge, which he's had for well over a year shows him as a retired tugboat captain, which is really Jan's title! He's asking to have a new badge please so reflect his own career
.
John Evans mentioned that our new Rotary Exchange student Anne Sophie will be arriving on Aug 12. Her first host family is ready to welcome her to the Coastside, their daughter Julia is a senior at HMBHS, is really looking forward to introducing Anne Sophie to her HMBHS friends. World Community Service
Tony announced that there would be a meeting to discuss this year's plan for world community service. If anyone's interested in participating, please let Tony know.
Rotary International Foundation momentKevin is leading the charge once again as the RI Foundation chair. He's done a great job at getting our club to be on Rotary Direct (by far the most participants in the district). Rotary Direct is where you contribute to RI Foundation automatically using your credit card. It's a simple way to make your annual contributions. He's encouraged everyone who's on Rotary Direct to make a slight increase in their monthly contributions this year. If anyone would like to participate in Rotary Direct please contact Kevin.
Relay For Life

Liz and Renee talked about Relay For Life which is going to be held on Saturday Aug 2 through Sunday Aug 3.
They're encouraging everyone to participate and join in the relay whether you can walk one lap or more, being there to show your support would be greatly appreciated. Our team theme is SUMMER FUN!
So far there are 10 participants in the group. You can choose to walk whenever and for however long you want. The most impactful times to be there would be for the Opening Ceremony and Survivor's Lap at 10AM (team photo!) on Saturday Aug 2, Luminaria at 8:30PM and Closing ceremony at 9:30AM Sunday, Aug. 3.
Walkers will be walking all through the night, but you don't have to if you don't want to. Not inclined to walk at all? Come join us for a team photo at 10AM on Saturday. Come and be a part of the festivities, you'll know many people there and have a good time.
Reconnecting with our Visioning 2014 Workshop -Identity
President Dianne asked everyone to participate in a table exercise. She asked us to answer the following questions:
What is Rotary?
What do you do?
When we're out and about in the community, we're sometimes asked, "What is Rotary?" and "What do you do?" This exercise will help us define who we are and what we do. How would you like non-Rotarians to answer these questions? We had very little time to circle back and talk about what each table came up with, but we'll probably be exploring this further in future meetings.
Walking Out Thought
•To be a Rotarian is to dig pools;
IN WHICH WE MAY NEVER SWIM
•To be a Rotarian is to write music;
TO WHICH YOU MAY NEVER DANCE
•To be a Rotarian is to plant trees;
UNDER WHICH YOU MAY NEVER SIT
•To be a Rotarian is to build a city and a community;
FROM WHICH YOU MAY NEVER BENEFIT
THIS IS WHAT ROTARY IS ALL ABOUT!!!!
