August 10, 2017 — CUSD New Teachers’ Luncheon
This meeting is always a challenge to write up, too much going on for my slow fingers to keep up with. I’m going to go for the “feeling” and impressions. Hope it works. So far, I know there are 15 new teachers this year; 7 at the high school,
New teachers and staff are coming in. Okay teachers and Rotarians are a good mix, the noise level is increasing exponentially. We begin the program with Superintendent Jane Yuster walking us through the school district’s start up process; they are ready and excited for the kids’ arrival. She also thanked us for our our continuing support, especially our collage and job programs as well as the Coyote program. The expectations for students centers around academics and kindness. The daily mantra is “Work hard, be kind and compassionate, and have a great day.” She went on to introduce the principals who each introduced their new team members.
Seth Feldman, new Principal at Cunha. Three teachers and a vice principal.
John Nasar, high school, remembered his first new teacher lunch in 1995 when he was a new teacher. Praised Rotary’s exchange program and introduced seven of his eight new teachers who included an art teacher from Copenhagen and a math teacher from S. Africa.
El Granada Principal introduced two new teachers. Thanked us for the dictionaries, they help students become independent learners.
David Purcell, new Principal at Hatch, introduced two new teachers from Spain. He came here from Spain under the same program. He signed up for a one year term, which led to sixteen years so far.
Meredith Raymond, special education, introduced four new staff members.
Jane Yuster recognized the behind the scenes staff members who handle things like HR, personnel, administrative assistants, they all help gear up each year.
Congratulations to the district for their ability to negotiate with the teachers’ union, restructure the salary schedules and all the others things they needed to do to retain teachers and to attract the most internationally diverse group of new teachers I think we’ve seen.
