Happy/Not So Happy News
Pat Roma was the fortunate winner of the top Raffle Prize for Magic on the Coast, and she very generously donated one half to the Club!
Mary Corcoran dropped Exchange Student Rafa from Spain off at the airport on Wednesday. The previous Monday they drove to Sacrament to get a needed certificate from the Secretary of State, and they used the opportunity to get Rafa a favorite meal - his last US burger. He will be missed! Mary and her husband Bill will be gone for the next few weeks for an adventurous vacation in Scotland, where they will be hiking from the Highlands to Dunbar along a trail named the John Muir Way, in honor of the famous Scottish son whose birthplace is Dunbar. Bill will be turning 70 on the trail, and he is retiring from United Airlines today! Bill had hiked the 220 miles in the high Sierras when he was 55; and even though this Scottish hike will be 255 miles long, it will be an easier one, being mostly in the lowlands and with camping supplies carried to them.
Joe Brennan told about his recent trip to Hawaii, complete with helicopter ride, snorkeling and hula dancing!
Mitone Griffiths is turning 45 tomorrow! She shares her birthday with Ginger Minelotti. Mitone is one of the youngest members of this Club.
Kevin O’Brien attended his 50th High School reunion over the weekend, where he met a friend, Yuri, who is an attorney in the criminal and juvenile arena. Kevin asked if he knew Bill Johnson, and it turns out Bill was Yuri’s mentor!
Paul Harris Award Presentation
Kevin O'Brien asked Pat Roma to come to the front of the room to present her with her 4th Paul Harris award, a pin studded with three sapphires. Each Paul Harris awards recognizes a contribution of $1000; and in addition, Pat is a generous donor to the Club.
Announcements
Rosi Fontana announced that she will be resigning her position as Club Secretary because of her new job at Stanford University. The position is now open, and she asks that anyone interested see Paul Wrubel.
Liz Schuck remindsed us that next Wednesday is the 4th of July! So far Rosi, Warren and Pat Roma have committed to participate in the parade. There wil be our usual signs to carry at the parade, with several new ones showing our Club’s support of the Children’s Program, Seniors’ Coastsider's Meals on Wheels program, Abundant Grace Coastside Worker Program, and our significant support of the new library. Liz needs volunteers to carry these signs. For the start of the parade, we will be meeting at the corner with the Library. Steve Wilson will bring his 1937 Chevy. We will all walk alongside his car
Liz also gave us an update on Shana Reilly-Pond. Shana feels loved and blessed for all the meals she has received during her chemotherapy treatment. In her honor there will a new walk named after her at the Rally for Life on July 14th. At Rally for Life, Paul Wrubel will be walking from 6 p.m. until midnight, as he has at past events. To register for Rally for Life please go online. There is no cost to register and no need to walk; just come to show your support for the rally in Rotary’s name.
Magic of the Coastside Funds Presentation
Liz also presented checks from our Magic of the Coastside 2018 fundraiser to Diane Madriz of Senior Coastsiders for their Meals on Wheels Program and to Elisa Magidoff of Children’s Coastside programs specifically to train Preschool teachers in Math.
Update from RI Convention 2018 - Toronto
Finally Mitone Griffiths gave us a very enthusiastic summary of her experience at the Rotary International Convention in Toronto, this past Saturday. Mitone met with 30 other Rotary women from the San Francisco area to travel dot Toronto where she rented an Air B&B. She was impressed by the quality of the speakers. The most remarkable to her was a young woman in her 20s, a Rotary Peace Fellow who suffered the Rwanda genocide when she was only 12 years old. Another impressive speaker was Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand & an administrator of the United Nation Development Program.
At the House of Friendship Mitone picked out a few interesting projects Rotarians are involved in throughout the world, such as Reads for Peace and one to clean mine fields and then planting of vines in the soil for regeneration. She also got to make her own Talking Stick, a technique used for resilience for service workers: she whittled down, sanded and then stamped her own beautiful stick, experiencing what a great way to de-stress this is. Another fascinating ongoing program is working toward the regeneration of coral in the ocean undertaken by a Club in the Philippines. This club is willing to work with us if we’re interested in going to their country!
Another group of Rotarians, as featured in the Rotarian Magazine recently, is helping an small town in Italy devastated by an earthquake in 2016 retain its youth and get their town back by helping with local jobs.
Mitone also learned about upcoming service trips and projects, such an immunization initiative in India. She met so many good people at the Whiskey and Wine Fellowships! Mitone was delighted to attend the Convention. It was a real stimulus overload! She strongly encourages us to join her next year, this time in Hamburg, Germany.
Student Update on RYLA 2018
(reported by Susan Kealey)
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is a leadership program coordinated by Rotary Clubs around the globe. Each year, thousands of young people participate in this program. Young people ages 13–30 are sponsored by Rotary Clubs to attend the event run by the Rotary District Committee.
RYLA participants Mia Griffiths and Grayson Barmore were here to share their recent experience with this year’s leadership camp. Grayson and Mia are Interact members as well as being part of the Rotary family through their parents. Grayson described how they learned who they are as leaders based on personality. They worked on building leadership skills with that in mind. Mia says her mom wanted to go more than she did! Mitone has been a volunteer at camp and clearly enjoyed herself. Mia was a bit nervous at first, but enjoyed herself and now stays in touch with people she met there. The participants were divided based on personality into “families” to house with. The groups worked on decision making and other leadership skill building activities. Both girls spoke about what they learned and how they will use it in the future.
Yes, they did the ropes course and the climb. Our club is a long-time sponsor of RYLA, and it is great to see kids from our community and our Interact Club participate. It is also a pleasure to see the articulate, enthusiastic young women Grayson and Mia have become.
