Program:The Role of Community Radio on the Coastside

Jim Henderson, KHMB 1710am/100.9FM

Jim and his bride visited beautiful Half Moon in 1981 while looking for a place to relocate and loved what they saw. He had taken early retirement from a career in industrial sales and network in the car rental business. He had been involved in broadcast for ten years in the Bay Area prior to arriving in HMB.

The idea for a radio station was there all along but didn’t go live on air until October 15, 2009. Initially it served three of Half Moon Bay’s neighborhoods, so they called it “Neighborhood Radio.” In 2012 they moved it to downtown and covered the entire Half Moon Bay proper with their low energy AM signal at 1710am. This year he has teamed up with Stu Hanson, an engineer who owns a low power FM license, adding 100.9 FM to the KHMB offerings.

The station is growing and is currently has an audience of 2,00 a week. Jim stressed that it is Community Radio and is here to serve the community. (Community; living in the same area and sharing common goals). KHMB is to support everything to enhance and better the community. It supports the community’s non profits and their good efforts. Its purpose and goal is to promote things local. An example is “Radio Magazine” hour on Thursdays. He mentioned the two interviews he did with Eddie Andreini entitled Magnificent Men and their Flying Machines. After wards Eddie said “This was fun, we’’llhave to do it again.” Jim referred the curious to their archives at hmbradio.com for those two interviews and all their other material.

The station is volunteer driven with but a single paid employee. Super volunteer Peter Finch of Moss Beach, who retired from professional radio, is an all around dynamo for the station performing interviews and ever so much more. The station is supported by non-profit funding (not pledges) and they sell advertising at charitable prices which is good business at the price. This low staffing is possible by using automated programming allowing staff to produce programs, interview, research etc.

A vital role KHMB is here to play is a voice and course of information in emergencies of disasters. Local station is better to rely on for local information than the big metropolitan stations. Broadcast is electricity dependent of course so stapes are being taken to assure it can stay on the air in an emergency as the capricious nature of disasters can sever power lines and worsen a deteriorating situation. The City of HMB has put funds in the budget for two generators for the radio station. Nick Catusso, Emergency Operations Coordinator for the Coastside is very supportive. When the Emergency Operations Center (next to the police/sheriff station) is activated they’ll deliver content to KHMB to inform the Coastside and coordinate as needed. The City put KHMB on their webiste for emergency broadcast messages. Nick secured a 500 W generator oft the FM site at Cameron’s RV Park.

"Try it, you’ll like it" - Jim Henderson

PS: Charise McHugh, Chair of the Coastside Emergency Action Plan, made the excellent suggestion that everyone program one button of their car radios to 100.9 FM so it will be there when you need it!
