John Evans John's presentation opened with a great aerial photo of Mavericks breaking with Half Moon Bay in the background. He was born in Los Angeles and attended Hamilton High School and then Santa Monica City College. His mom divorced but remarried a great guy who John honors as a father. He spent summers at his grandfather's Venice Beach house where he saw acrobatics on the beach so he took up gymnastics in high school and college. He was a natural for the Spirit Squad in the Fall off-season. In 1965 with the Viet Nam war in full swing he and a group of buddies were drafted so joined the Navy. He remains close to this cadre of friends ,the Buccaneers, to this day.
John met Larkin at the College of San Mateo where she was a cheerleader and he was into gymnastics plus his studies. She was headed to Chico State and John to Cal Poly, an impasse only broken by his proposal of marriage - then they were off to CAL Poly in San Luis Obispo. At CAl Poly John studied Architecture and joined a gymnastic group. He was a gymnast and trampolinist in SLO and coached in Half Moon Bay for the High School and the City's Park and Rec. Dept. for 20 years. He moved on to the private side coaching at Gymtown. He continues to judge events for the USA Gymnastics Association. Larkin taught Art at the local High School and has recently retired and loves to cook with grandchildren in the kitchen and to garden.
John is an architect and planner specializing in Japanese carpentry and Historic Preservation. He owns the historic Borden Barn on Purisima Street which houses his office and other tenants. He points out the draw to architecture in HMB where the sky is generally white and pointed out that atria are good in the coast climate. He drew the Shorebird project in pencil, old school, and has moved on to computer graphics and modeling. Four of his homes have been featured in Sunset Magazine. He show cased a few homes in his PowerPoint for us.
A long time Rotarian, John has been active in the Rotary Student Exchange program and showed slides of students Andrea, Joseppi, Daniel, Valentina, Fie, Linda and Carolyn.
John loves golf and is a car guy, recalling his bug eyed Sprite and still owns his beloved white 1963 Porsche. John plays the piano and included a clip of him playing Scot Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag with his grandson on his lap. He just attended the Sixtieth anniversary celebrations at Disneyland.
